Shaped Paintings

“Fractured Eden,” acrylic on routed MDF, 2022

How it started

The spaces between tree branches are like stained-glass shards. I was drawn to those fractured shapes. I made this experimental painting in 2017 to see if I could break outside of the frame. What fun! I could see a new way of creating ahead of me.

Between

is a series of shaped paintings inspired by the spaces between the branches of bare trees.

Letting Go

Sometimes I cut my shaped paintings out and then paint on them. But more often, I paint them first and then carve out portions of the painting with a router. This is an exercise in sacrifice, and it is a bit scary to destroy part of the painting, but that part of the process has become meaningful to me as well.
